One map, two things
There are two things here. A letter that drifts across the map until it reaches someone, and a signpost that stands in one place and gathers people around it.
A drifting one-to-one letter
A letter you send from where you are drifts a little further every day. In time it reaches one person passing nearby.
A public community that stays put
Plant a signpost at one point on the map and that spot becomes a gathering place. People nearby come together to post and reply.
The life of a letter
A letter is not finished when you send it. That is when it starts moving on its own.
You write a letter where you are standing. The coordinates of that spot are saved with it, and the letter starts drifting from there.
A letter never stays put. It moves a little every day, and the path behind it builds up into a journey.
Someone passing nearby finds it. A letter becomes visible once it has drifted inside your radius, and that is when it can be read.
Every vessel holds out for a different length of time. Once that time is up the letter sinks, and its journey stops there.
Signposts
A signpost is a public community you plant at one point on the map. If a letter is a greeting that passes through once, a signpost is a story that stays and carries on.
You pick a spot within range of where you are and plant a signpost there. It cannot stand within 500 m of an existing one, so gathering places spread out instead of piling up.
Some signposts let anyone in straight away, others need the founder’s approval. Each one has a limit on members, so no single place grows without end.
Post text and photos on the notices, the open board and the photo album, and reply in the comments. The founder tends the signpost and welcomes new members.
A letter has to drift inside your radius before you can read it. A signpost, though, shows on the map and can be opened even when it stands outside that radius.
